Recent Good Reads

Some good books I've read recently I recommend to anyone.

Atlas Shrugged - A classic I regret not having read earlier. Any Rand teaches her objectivism philosophy through a engaging logic filled story. It's interesting to draw parallels between with the book and whats happening today.

Ishmael - The premise is corny, a Gorilla teaches someone how to save the world. The story however is a clever way of passing on an interesting perspective and philosophy to its readers.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal - Hilarious fictional account of Jesus' childhood.

The Alchemist - An interesting short fable useful for tweaking you look at the big picture of life. Reading it during a time I had a decision to make made it an easier one.

Are we evolving?

"UK geneticist Steve Jones gave a presentation entitled Human Evolution Is Over. He asserts that human beings have stopped evolving because modern social customs have lowered the age at which human males have offspring, which results in fewer of the mutations necessary to drive evolutionary change. Apparently the fate of our species now depends upon older guys hooking up with younger woman. I, for one, welcome this development."

Great Music Websites

I came across a great website that lets you search for specific songs and add them to a play list of music that gets played. Seeqpod.com. The downside is that they don't have everything available but they tend to have at least some tracks for every band I've searched for so far, even bands that are not that popular.

Another site i use on a regular basis has been Pandora. This site lets you create stations seeded by your favorite bands and songs and plays other similar songs based on your selections. The songs they have in their library have been reviewed by music experts on many levels so its not as simple as just having a matching genre.

Some background into the Bunk name....

History may be Bunk but here is some bunk history. With the last name of Bunk I've been asked many times of the name got shortened on the boat over to the US. Well it turns out is did. My Great Grandparents Josef and Agnieszka Bak came over to America and at some point their name got changed to Bunk. Ellis Island has a great website where you can look up the records of passengers coming over. Below if the one for my great grandma.
Arrival Record of Adnieszka Bunk
Interesting to note on the manifest that she had not previously been in the US, so she was coming to join Josef at that time. His last name is also given in the list as Bak. I can find no record of his arrival, probably came before Ellis was constructed. She came from Komorow, which I believe is located west of Krakow in what was then Silesia (a part of Germany, since Poland didn't exist at that time). My 2nd cousin Jeff remembers that Mom (My great Grandma) said she remembered her father hating the Prussians (e.g. Germans?) which would make sense if they both came from somewhere in Silesia.

Red Sox vs. Yankees

Ask anyone the greatest rivalry in baseball and Reds Sox vs. the Yankees will invariably be said more then any other response. As we stand before a grueling five game series that will significantly factor into who wins the AL East baseball fans watch eyes glued to the TV set.

Anyone who knows me well knows I'm a big Red Sox fan. I say it is because of where I grew up, but my state's support of the boys from bean town is by no means absolute. This NY Times article describes an area of New England where the rivalry runs strong, where brothers and cousins living towns apart are on different sides of the war. It describes Connecticut. It was in Windsor, CT a town equidistant from both cities that I forged my strong support of the sox. Except for the rare Mets fan there were no neutral stances on who you routed for. It is my belief that these border keepers of Red Sox nation, those that have to deal with annoying loud obnoxious Yankee fans after a loss, that form the heart of the team's large fan base.

Sox take 4 out of 5 in this upcoming series.....you heard it here first!

P.S. Red Sox nation is alive and well in the opposite corner of the country. In Hermosa Beach, CA where I live there are two Red Sox Bars (Complete with large signs announcing it). No Yankee bars......

Keeping Hip to New Tunes

Here's the situation. I am an Ipod Addict. I have a huge music collection I love listening to. It's big and diverse enough so that I don't really get tired of the songs in my collection. The problem is I have trouble finding out about new bands and different artists outside of what I already know. Occasionally a friend will turn my onto something new but not nearly as much as when I was young and everyone was listening to new stuff. The challenge is to keep up on new and different stuff out there. The solution........Pandora by the Music Genome Project. Its is simple is entering in a favorite band or song and then they come up with similar music. I tested it out with some pretty obscure unusual bands I like and was really impressed with the results that were additionally returned. Definitely going to add Pandora to the sites I go to regularly.

Remote Aquarium Monitor and Control System

As I was taking the dust off of my portfolio and resume this weekend I came accross the link to my senior design project, a Remote Aquarium Monitor and Control System. It was one of the most engaging things i got to work on during college. Check out our homemade underwater temperature sensor. It saved us a $50-$100 in expenses and worked incredibly well.

The project was featured on RNews (Rochester News Station) and the Democrat and Chronicle.

A co-worker, John Brinkman has created his own blog. I have recently been pushing the idea to co-workers that we should establish a blogging system for NASA. John is pessimistic people at NASA would ever bother making blog posts. He is however an open minded pessimist and is getting some first hand insight on running his own blog.

My angel fish are going to have babies

My two angel phish are going to have babies. They have laid eggs numerous times and they hatched at least once. The time they hatched I tried moving the leaf they hatched on to the top of the tank. This was unsuccessful as they ceased to exist the next day. I'm thinking about getting a breading net for them. What's really neat to watch is mom and dad being so teritorial. They don't let any of the other fish on that side of the tank. I decided to do a little research this time on the breeding of angel phish and come up with this Angel Phish Breeding Article. Looks like I'll need to get lucky for any of them to survive. Here is a picture of my angels gaurding the leaf with the eggs.

Congrats Evan on making it to the WSOP

On Friday Evan McBride was your typical casual poker player. He invested $11 and won a 250 person tournament. The prize was a free buy in(~$350 Value) to a tournament that if you placed in the top 7 you would go to the WSOP. Well he placed 5th. Evan is on his way to the World Series of Poker($10,000 buy-in), with 10-day hotel stay, and $1500 in spending money.

Congratulations Evan!

I think this means I'm going to have to finally head down to vegas and support my friend at going up against the world's best.

Interesting way to explore Art

Check out 12 different artist's illustrations in a very unique way

BB King

Last Night I had the pleasure of seeing a living lengend of Blues, BB King along with his band the Bobby "Blue" Bland Band at the Palace Theatre. The king is old, 80 to be exact, and his age showed. Being able to see his was an experience, and at $10 for a balcony seat I would do it again. I was a little disapointed he only sang vocals and couldn't play his guitar, Lucille. I presume because of this age and arthritis. If there is one type of music that is good to hear from an old man, it's the blues. BB King not only sang many great tunes but interacted allot with the crowd. I can tell in his prime he must have been one of those performers that reallly played to his audience. If he comes to your town I recomend seeing im while you still can.

Mystery Bus Tour

Bar Hopping, a fun time and a great way to visit some new bars. But what do you do if you live in Cleveland and it's winter? The answer

Cleveland Barhopper's Mystery Bus Tour

The concept is simple. You go to the starting bar and a bus takes you from bar to bar. The cool part is you have no idea where you are going next. I've done a mystery bar hopping tour twice now and have been introduced to allot of new cool bars.

The one I went we most recently went on rocked!. The bus we
went on was pimped out. It was a school bus with all the seats
ripped out and replaced with seats along the two walls so everyone
faced each other. The sound system was big and there was a cooler
in the back of the bus. We all got hand stamps and I think at almost
every bar there was a bus rider specific special(s). At some bars we got some free food. There were also contests like who
could chug a pint of Guinness the fastest(I won three concert tickets
with that one).

Check out these pictures...I think they tell the story better then I can.

I got an Ipod

I would like to send out a very big thankyou to a co-worker of mine, Gary, who was kind enough to sell me his 20GB ipod for $100. He had won it as a result of filling out a workshop survey drawing. He had it for months without using it so he offered to sell it to me. I have had it only 4 hours now and am loving it more and more every minute.

I have loaded my humble work laptop music collection (2GB) onto it so far. I can't wait to get 20GB's from my master 100GB collection I have at home.

After getting on the music collection I decided to see if I could compensate for my missing palm by using ipod's calendar and todo list functionality. First task was to find a way to get all my data that I currently keep in palm desktop, into my ipod. I found pal2ipod that is up to the task but it seems as if a few calendar entries appear too many times.
