Save the internet

A recent FCC decision has removed longstanding protections under which the Internet has flourished. As a result, telco/cable network operators--who control 94% of broadband Internet access and face no meaningful competition--have announced plans to use their control over the consumer Internet access market to control the Internet content and services market.

In English, websites may have to pay internet providers to ensure there is a quick pathway to their websites. This will mean that new and innovative websites will be slower unless they come up with money to pay off all the telcons. This will ruin the internet. Imagine if Google never got popular because there two server Stanford based project only offered slow access! A really good explanation of this can be found in this short video.

What can you do about it? Spend one quick minute and go to http://www.itsournet.org/. And just enter in your contact information and emails automatically get sent to your congressmen. It took me less then a minute.

How to learn about the semantic web

I am often asked for where to go to learn on your own more about the semantic web. I could go and create my own link page but why bother if someone else has done it for you. A must read for anyone looking to learn about Semantic Technologies, RDF, OWL, etc. is:

While driving from the airport one evening I look at the gas prices and see this

The cell phone cam doesn't take good pictures but someone as a joke must have put over the prices, stickers saying

US Cities Sustainability Rankings

As someone who is likely to move on a somewhat regular basis I found this sustainability ranking study an interesting look at different cities. Surprising to me is that Los Angeles has a good mass transit system, news to me. I find it to be one of the worst out of major cities I have been to. They must be referring to the city itself which people that don't work there seldom go to (I have only driven through it a few times).
